"Slop" is old farm English for the bucket of scraps tipped into the pig trough. Around 2024 the internet borrowed it for something new: the tide of cheap, generic AI content washing over feeds, inboxes, and search results. The metaphor stuck because it fit. Slop is filling, indistinct, and made without care.
Once slop was a noun, the verb followed. To deslop something is to take the slop back out of it. The word now shows up in two trades. Programmers use it for stripping AI cruft from codebases. Writers use it for editing the robot flavor out of prose. Same instinct, different material. This site serves the second trade.
Not AI involvement. A human can produce perfect slop unaided, and plenty did for decades of corporate memos. Slop is a set of habits: stock vocabulary where plain words would do, emphasis standing in for facts, hedges stacked until a sentence commits to nothing, and rhythm so even it drones. We measured the gap in our word-list experiment: AI-flavored marketing copy carried 222 tells per 1,000 words. Lincoln carried 3.7. The difference was never one forbidden word. It is density.
A whole industry sells "humanizers" that shuffle synonyms to sneak past AI detectors. That is not desloping; that is laundering, and it barely works. Independent testing found that surface rewriting moves modern detector scores by fractions of a point. Meanwhile the detectors themselves misfire on real humans, which is how students end up wrongly accused.
Desloping aims at the writing, not the scanner. Cut the slop because the sentence gets better, and the question of what a detector thinks becomes someone else's problem.
One: cut the stock words. Every "delve," "leverage," and "landscape" swaps for a plainer verb or a real noun. Two: delete the throat-clearing. "It is important to note that" precedes the note; keep the note. Three: trade emphasis for facts. Where the draft says "significantly improved," write the number. Four: vary the rhythm. A four-word sentence after a thirty-word one wakes the reader up. Five: read it aloud. Your ear catches what your eye forgives.
